General Information
Traditions in Geology teaching and research dates back to the very foundation of the University in 1755. First geological departments were opened in 1804. On the base of these departments the Faculty of Geology and Soils was established in 1938. In 1949 it was transformed into the Faculty of Geology. Moscow State University’s Geological school is well known over the world. Academicians A.P.Pavlov, V.I.Vernadsky, A.D.Arkhangelsky, N.V.Belov, A.P.Vinogradov, V.V.Menner, Yu.A.Orlov, V.I.Smirnov, professors N.B.Vassoevitch and I.O.Brod formed the fame of it.
The Faculty of Geology trains high class specialists in the fundamental research of the Earth and soils. Faculty graduates obtain deep theoretical knowledge as well as it’s practical applications. Nowadays world recognized professors are working at the Faculty. Along with teaching the Faculty scientists maintain research in the areas of General Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology. They cooperate with the geologists of more than ten universities and scientific centres in Europe, Canada, Mexico, China. The students of the Faculty have at their disposal up-to-date scientific laboratories. Field studies are carried out on well equipped geological training centres, the major one being located in the Crimea. Marine geological training is organized on the Black and Baltic seas.
